CANADIAN BIATHLON MEN MATCH CAREER-BEST IN SEVENTH WORLD CUP RELAY
Sunday, January 22, 2012

ANTHOLZ-ANTERSELVA, Ita.—The Canadian men’s biathlon squad teamed up to match their career-best performance with a seventh-place result at a World Cup in Antholz-Anterselva, Italy on Sunday.

Led by two-time Olympian, Jean-Philippe Le Guellec of Shannon, Que., along with Brendan Green, of Hay River, N.W.T., Calgary’s Nathan Smith and Regina’s Scott Perras, the Canadian squad clocked a combined time of 1:14:19.1 in the 4x7.5-kilometre relay.

With an under-the-weather Brendan Green putting the Canadians in contention with a solid opening leg, Le Guellec put down another strong effort to set up the final two legs where the young Smith took command of his shooting and held on for seventh spot.

“This is an awesome result and we will take a lot of positives away from this one,” said 28-year-old Perras. “Considering everything, it is a great day and I would not be surprised if results like this start to come now more regularly.”

The men ski 7.5 kilometres with two stops at the range. The first starter of each team begins in a simultaneous mass start with other participants, and complete their leg before handing off to the next teammate. Competitors in the relay each carry three spare rounds. If all five targets are not knocked down with the first five rounds, the spares may be used, which takes more time because they are loaded by hand.

France completed the golden sweep in both men’s and women’s relays this weekend with a time of 1:12:14.7. Germany was second at 1:12:26.7, while Austria skied to the bronze at 1:12:56.4.

The Canadian Team will now take a week off to participate in a training camp in preparation for the World Championships.

CANADA’S LE GUELLEC AND GREEN CRACK TOP-20 AT BIATHLON WORLD CUP IN CZECH REPUBLIC

Thursday, January 12, 2012

NOVE MESTO, Cze.—Canada’s Jean-Philippe Le Guellec and Brendan Green cracked the top-20 at an individual biathlon World Cup competition in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Le Guellec, of Shannon, Que., missed just two shots in his four rounds of shooting to post a 17th-place time of 50:18.7 in the men’s 20-kilometre individual competition. The two-time Olympian was joined in the top-20 by Brendan Green, of Hay River, N.W.T. was 19th. Green missed three shots while clocking a time of 50:32.7.

Today was a pretty good day. We arrived in Europe 5 days ago, and I'm never sure what to expect with how my body will handle jet lag. It always seems to vary, but today things worked out well,” said Green. “The skiing felt tough, but I actually had one of my best skis this season which was sweet, and I was able to match it with decent shooting.”

Brendan Green Fan Club Report

The marksmanship data for the first three events has been compiled and Hay River’s shooting star, Brendan Green has rocketed into the upper echilon of the sport, ranking 6th in the world. He has had perfect shooting in all three 10 K sprint events and both relay events.

Brendan Makes His Mark On The World Cup Scene Through  Two Early January Races - Team Canada is Riding High!

It has been a very Happy New Year so far for Brendan and the Canadian team on the 2011Biathlon World Cup stage.  Hay River Ski Club’s Brendan Green fan clubbers have been wildly cheering our local star's outstanding success through two amazing weekends of world class biathlon.  We have only a few days to catch our breath before the racing circuit gets back into action at Rupolding , Germany, where thousands of riotous fans will be cheering wildly at the Super Bowl of world cup biathlon!

Brendan Reloads for New Biathlon Racing Season

Brendan Green left with the national team Nov. 20 for a training camp in Sweden in preparation for the season opener in Ostersund. Late season testing and shooting results indicate that Brendan is in top form in spite of suffering a set-back to his summer training when a hard fall resulted in a partially separated shoulder. Fortunately, he managed to fully recover from his injury with a minimal loss of training time. Brendan’s strength has always been in the skiing and his ski times are usually up there with the fastest in his field. He is confident that his preparation in that respect has been solid. A special focus for Brendan’s summer training was in the shooting. To reach the podium, Brendan will need to have near perfect results in the range. Brendan acquired some new equipment which he hopes will enable him to achieve just that; including a new rifle with a customized stock and modified sights. A good deal of his training time has been devoted to adjusting the fit and becoming familiar with this new equipment, and he now feels ready to put it to the test.

NWT Biathlon is proud of Brendan’s accomplishments in our sport, and we wish him the best of luck for another great season.

Go Brendan Go!

A huge thank you to all for making the weekend such a success!   Thanks to all parents for officiating and/or coaching and for the wonderful lunches!  Thanks to the Hay River Ski Club (Ellie and Bob) for hosting the Polar Cup!   Thanks to Pat for the awesome trails and range!  Thanks to the Ft Smith parents, coaches and biathletes for attending!   And thanks to the biathletes for going so hard and putting in such a super effort!

Good luck to our Seniors and Youth Men/Women who will be travelling to Canmore, Alberta in two weeks to compete in the first of the Alberta Calforex Cup races!  This is the second of their qualifying races for the Canada Winter Games and Canadian Biathlon Championships in February and March respectively.  They certainly had a great warm-up here in Hay River!

Tuesday, November 16, Team Update From Coach Chuck Lirette

JP' Interview: Prospects for the Canadian biathlon squad heading into this world cup racing season.  Brendan Green and JP Leguellec lead the Canadians into this season - high hopes for great results!

Happy November!   And think snow everyone!

1)    Polar Cup 1

We will be deciding within the next day or so if it is a go this weekend......it will be based largely on how much snow we get in the next day or so (Environment Canada is promising some).  We will be sure to get the word out and to let the clubs in Ft Smith and Yellowknife know as soon as possible.  If it is 'no-go' on the 20th and 21st, the 27th and 28th is our alternative date.

2)    Skins

As we prepare for the upcoming race, we will be issuing racing skins to all biathletes to wear during the race.  If anyone has skins left from last year, could you please let me know as we begin to organize sizes for the upcoming races.  We have red skins from the Hay River Ski Club and blue skins from NWT Biathlon that our biathletes can wear witrh pride!

3)    2724 Cadets

For any of the biathletes aged 12+ who are looking for an activity that complements our biathlon program, consider the 2724 Cadet Squad.  The Cadet activities include marksmanship and biathlon, in addition to the more traditional focus on drill and other cadet skills.  Last year, some of our biathletes had the opportunity to travel and compete on behalf of the 2724 Cadets and subsequently the Northern Region at biathlon and marksmanship competitions.   The Cadets offer a diverse range of activities over the course of the year (first aid, fitness testing, camps etc...) and assist with community events such as Remembrance Day and Track & Field.   Cadets also have the opportunity to travel to Whitehorse in the summer for camps that run anywhere from 2-4 weeks in duration as well.

Cadets meet at the RC Legion on Monday evening at 7 Pm, and alternate on Wednesday or Thursday evening at 7 Pm for marksmanship.  Biathletes who are registered in Cadets are considered to be present at Cadets when they are at biathlon practice on Mondays.  For more information, talk to Cpt Paul Theriault (who is also the Principal at DJSS).  I assist Cadets as a Civilian Instructor when I can and can offer a little more insight to those who may have interest.

Cadet biathletes from last year who are not enrolling in cadets this year are asked to return uniforms to the Legion asap.  Thanks!

4)    Bingo

Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered to work with our Bingo's!   They have been quite successful thus far and provide us with some funds available that our Club can access this season!

Shirley and Ashley will be working alongside Sheila and learning all of the skills that are needed to coordinate our fundraising efforts.  Thank you for taking this on for the biathlon program!

Our next Bingo is on Friday, December 3rd.  A few parents have already indicated that they will be out of town or have another commitment that evening, so we will need everyone who might be available to lend a hand!

There is an opening for a Bingo on Friday, December 17th as well.....we will need to discuss this week if we will have enough parents in town that night (it is the last day of school prior to the Xmas Break) and if we want to pursue this as one more fundraiser.

5)    Ski Club AGM

Sheila, Pat and I attended the Hay River Ski Club AGM last week.....they are getting geared up fpr the season ahead and are already planning an 'Open House' and 'Snow Show' on the weekend of the 27th.  The Snow Show offers a variety of ski equipment and related supplies (gloves, wax, etc...) for sale.  They are also planning a "Five Year Visionary Exercise" in early January and are asking that all biathletes and parents participate in planning for what you would like to see at the Ski Club in the next five years.  The Open House offers a social during the evening (adults only) and also functions as a membership drive for the Club as well.

Ellie Baxter is our President and Bob White is the Vice President.  Pat also sits on the Executive of the Ski Club, and Sheila and I are the Biathlon Liaisons should you have any suggestions or questions to bring forward.   The website is at www.hayriverskiclub.com

A reminder that all registrations should now be completed on-line.  To any parents who have rented skis, you can leave a cheque with me for the rental fee and I will forward it on for you.

PTubs - Tentatively March 12 and 13th here at the Ski Club!

5)    Thank you's!

To Shannon, for the wood stove that is in 'Home on the Range'....I incorrectly identified Boyd as being the donor in my last email...my apologies and             thanks again Shannon!
To Pat for coordinating the two skis on the Snye......awesome!  April forwarded a few pics and I have attached a couple more as well.  Also thanks for          the cookies and fire to keep us warm, Pat!
To Doug and Pat, thanks for the help with some gun repairs last weekend!
To Dorothy for the new red flag on the range...the mice chewed the last one!
To all the gun runners, recorders and officials over the last few Sunday time trials.....fabulous job!   We are learning from every one of them and will be         well prepared for the Polar Cup in the near future.
To Ashley, great banana bread today!   Mmmm...

Reminder that Monday's practice will be a waxing and gun cleaning session should we have snow....this will allow Pat to start packing and for the base to freeze without all of our footprints in it!   If there is no snow, we will be back at the range as normal.

Thanks everyone for all the support, fun and laughs!       Chuck

From:  Chuck Lirette, Hay River Community Director

Hay River Community Report

2009-2010 was an outstanding year for the biathletes involved in our Club last year!  Our biathletes achieved many fantastic results and as they continued to grow and develop their skills in the sport of biathlon!

Highlights

Hay River hosted the three Polar Cup biathlon races last winter.  Additionally, Hay River was host to a Biathlon Development Camp held in conjunction with the AWG Territorial Biathlon Trials, and was also the host community for the NWT Territorial Cross Country Trials.  In the Spring, Hay River hosted the NWT XC Ski Championships.    Amazing!  This would not be possible without the outstanding team of volunteers that continue to work tirelessly in support of our programs, and we again extend our collective thanks and appreciation to all!

In addition to the Polar Cups, Hay River biathletes attended races in Edmonton (Calforex Cup) and Hinton (Western Canadian Championships).  Our team performed well at these two southern races with several medals being earned, including a few of the gold variety!

The highlight of our year was definitely the Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie!  Hay River biathletes made up 7 postions on the team, and helped to contribute to the 22 medals won in total by Team NWT.  In fact, every HR athlete came home with at least one AWG medal.  Special congratulations to our Junior Ski Relay Team on beating out Alaska and Russia for the gold medal!  We are very proud of all members of the Ski and Snowshoe Teams, and together Team NWT earned almost one-quarter of the NWT's entire medal count at the Games!

A renewed partnership between the Hay River Biathlon program and the Hay River 2724 Cadets provided for some unique opportunities for our biathletes this past year.  Four of our athletes qualified at the Northern Region Trials in Whitehorse to represent the North at the Cadet National Championships in Valcartier, Quebec!  Along with two cadet biathletes from Ft Smith, Team NWT had their best result ever on the National stage, winning a number of medals and representing the north with skill and pride.  One of our biathletes also earned a spot on the Cadet National Marksmanship Team, and ably helped to represent the Northern Region at the National Competition in Edmonton last Spring.  We look forward to the opportunities that the Cadet biathlon program offers to our biathletes in the year to come.

The Winter Olympics were held this past year in Vancouver, BC, and our entire team and community celebrated and followed Brendan Green's race with a great deal of pride!   The Biathlon team had the chance to participate in an Olympic Pep Rally for Brendan as they marched in a torch and lit the cauldron during the ceremony.  Joseph had the honour of carrying the actual Olympic flame in Inuvik, and was thus selected to be the honourary torch bearer at the rally for Brendan.

Our Club was also featured across the NWT within the media and as role models for other youth in the north.  Our entire team participated in the making of the "Not Us' anti-drug commercial, and the NWT Biathlon team on anti-smoking posters by the "Don't Be a Butthead Program"!  We are very proud of the commitment to a drug-free lifestyle that our biathletes continue to choose and practice within our community.

Our team had the privilege of training with two elite athletes this past year.  Brendan Green worked with the team for two days in June, while Amy MacDonald worked with the biathletes in August.  Our athletes learned many tips from Brendan and Amy, and always appreciate the opportunity of training with them!

Congratulations to four members of our biathlon family on their recognition by Sport North this past year!  Angeline and Christopher were named as NWT's Junior Female and Male Athletes of the Year, Pat was recognized with the Contributor to Sport Award for his many hours in support of our biathletes and Larry as the NWT's Corporate Sponsor of the Year for his unselfish and continued support of biathlon and sports in general within our community!  Pat was also recognized by Biathlon Canada with an award that recognizes his dedication and commitment to the sport!   Congratulations, Pat!

The 2010-2011 season promises to be another terrific year!  We have been shooting and training since the beginning of August.  Six of our biathletes attended the Alberta Biathlon Camp at Augustana University in Camrose in mid-August.  We are thrilled that we have 6 new recruits joining our program this year, and look forward to working with them and their parents and in watching their development as biathletes this winter.  Our Senior athletes are especially looking forward to potentially travelling to the Canada Winter Games in Halifax and the National Biathlon Championships in New Brunswick.  Our biathletes aged 13+ successfully completed the Firearms Safety Course recently, and are in the process of applying for the FAC Certificates.  Our fundraising for the year ahead has also started as we look forward to Polar Cup races in Hay River and Yellowknife, and one or two of the Calforex Cup races in Alberta in the winter months to come!

The Hay River Biathlon family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to April Glaicar for all of her time and energy in working as one of our coaches for the past 6 years!  Unfortunately, April will not be available to coach this year, but the good news is that she will still be a big part of our program as a parent and volunteer!   Thank you, April, on behalf of all the biathletes and parents!

I hope that this report satisfactorily captures the efforts of a wonderful team of parents, youth and volunteers from within our community that continue to work together in providing our youth with the opportunity to be biathletes!

Biathletes ski with National Team members Brendan Green and Jamie Robb.

Members of the Hay River Biathlon Club joined Brendan Green and Jamie Robb from the Canadian National Team for one final ski by trekking out on to the ice of Great Slave Lake on April 28th.   After trudging through a foot of water and slush on the shoreline and then climbing over a pressure ridge on the edge of the lake, Joseph Christopher & Andrew Lirette, Mason Hachey and Angeline Magtibay strapped their skis on for one final time in the 2008-2009 season.  Ski coach Marek Napiorkowski also accompanied the group that was lead by Pat Bobinski out on to the lake.

Ice conditions were ideal as the group skied for about an hour under sunny skies and +9 temperatures.  After going for a 20 minute ski as a group, everyone enjoyed one of Pat’s famous cookies and a juice box. Afterwards, Brendan and Jamie lead the group in some games, drills and instruction designed to take advantage of the tremendous glide that everyone was getting. The Hay River biathletes appreciated the tips and the opportunity to train with two of the best biathletes that our country has to offer.

Prior to wrapping up for the afternoon, the group participated in some impromptu sprints on the lake ice by skiing all out in one direction for one minute.  While it was a close race, the National team members prevailed and took top honours!

The Hay River biathletes would like to extend their thanks to Brendan Green and Jamie Robb, as well as Doug Swallow & Pat Bobinski for making this memorable and unique opportunity available to them!
