Northwestern Air Lease is offering reduced air fare to those who are registered.
Winter road from Fort McMurray is open and in good condition if participants are interested in a road trip.
There is also some talk about organizing a chartered bus excursion from McMurray.
Trail is the historic route that opened up the Northwest to the fur trade. It has been used by aboriginal people for thousands of years.
It is very beautiful on rolling hills across the banks of the mighty Slave River. Four sets of rapids can be viewed from locations along the trail and mist from the open water coats the huge trees with a crystal like frost.
Snow conditions are excellent.
Hope to see you there.

Canadian Team Jubilant After 6th Place Finish in Hochfilson World Cup Mixed Relay
Canadians Aim For Top-Six, Shoot, Score
With each member of their relay team notching top-thirty performances so far this season, and with powerhouse Norway sitting the event out, the Canadians stated a goal to finish in the top six.
“Feeling great for the mixed relay today,” Kocher wrote in an e-mail the morning of the race. “We have a strong team and we really have the potential to finish in the top. All four us need to focus on the process, and stay in control.”
Imrie, Kocher, Brendan Green, and JP Le Guellec did just that, tagging off as high as fourth at one point before slipping back to sixth. Here’s what Kocher wrote to FasterSkier after the race:
“We were ecstatic in the warmup/finish area (Megan, Rosanna [Crawford], Marco [Marc-Andre Bedard], myself and massage therapist Scott) when Brendan shot clean again. He hasnt missed a shot in sprints and relays this trimester. And we called him our superhero. I’m thrilled that we showed today that we have the ability as a team to be in the top 6, not just as individuals. And that is an inspirating, motivating confidence booster for the entire team. Not just the athletes but support staff and pyramid around us that help us get there.”
As for her own race, Kocher had some adventures with mechanics:
Standing shooting was going super until those last two shots. I had some trouble loading one of my spares- it got stuck in my chamber and I wasted some time fixing this and loading another round. And when I missed one of my extras I felt a bit stressed, and my legs were shaking as the lactate pooled! Thoughts of ‘focus you better hit this because you are not doing a penalty loop today’ flashed through my brain!
Kocher did drop the last target and the team avoided the penalty loop completely.
Here’s how Imrie described the result:
The relay ended in a great result for us. Everyone put everything they had into this race today. Zina’s ski time was one of the best of the day, Brendan was an absolute professional out there, and JP was, as usual, a rock solid anchor under pressure.
I got involved in a tangle leaving the mass start, but I didn’t panic about it. The accordion effect on the first climb was so huge that I was back in the pack immediately, stress free. Shooting was just alright- I wanted to be more aggressive the whole way through the race, and I did that.
The prize ceremony was an early Christmas present for the team.
Finally, anchor skier JP Le Guellec had this to say:
The whole week end was a high for Canadian biathlon I think. From the races on the World Cup, finishing with a strong mixed relay (6th), but also on the IBU Cup – 3rd and 4th places, and 4th on their mixed relay also. As a whole, I think the team will be able to enjoy the vacation and be able to focus on quality training. For me, it’s definitly a good way to head back home. Leaving on a “team high” like this is pretty priceless.

Introducing: The Northwest Territories Arctic Winter Games Biathlon Team and Alternates for AWG Whitehorse 2012

His Excellency the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, and her Excellency, Sharon Johnston, joined enthusiastic Arctic Winter Games Trials biathletes and fans for Saturday morning races on a day when weather conditions were ideal for a biathlon competition.
Their Excellencies impressed everyone with their spirit and fitness , as they donned cross country skis and rocketed around the 2 km M & M loop. Joining them for a ski were young Hay River biathlon stars, Angeline Magtibay, Christopher Lirette and Davida Patterson.
The ski served as a christening of sorts for the newly signed Brendan Green Olympic Trail which was dedicated by the Hay River Ski Club in recognition of Brendan Green’s performance with Biathlon Team Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Everyone fell in love with Their Excellencies as they jumped into action cheering at the biathlon stadium and extending their best wishes to all the organizers and participants. To kick off the afternoon event, Dakota Pope and Selina Buggins offered up a touching rendition of ‘Oh, Canada’ in English, French and Slavey.
At the close of the post race medal presentation, the Governor General addressed dignitaries, biathletes and guests with glowing comments describing how much he and his wife had enjoyed their visit to Hay River and the north. With an eloquence befitting Canada’s Governor General, Mr. Johnston won the hearts of the crowd.
Anticipation of the Governor General’s visit had been at a fever pitch. Their Excellencies’ visit was everything and more than expected. It would appear that Northerners in this neck of the woods, will now be adding two fellow Canadians from Ottawa to their list of extended family.

Saturday, December 10, (left to right) Steven Wallace, Davida Patterson, The Governor General of Canada David Johnston, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, Angeline Magtibay, Bob White, Christopher Lirette... the group skied the Brendan Green Trail for starters and finished up on the M & M Trail.

CANADA’S BRENDAN GREEN SPRINTS TO CAREER-BEST 14TH AT BIATHLON WORLD CUP
Friday, December 2, 2011
OESTERSUND, Swe.—Canada’s Brendan Green had a perfect day on the shooting range to match his career-best performance on the Biathlon World Cup after finishing in 14th spot in the men’s 10-kilometre sprint competition in Oestersund, Sweden on Friday.
The 25-year-old Green, of Hay River, N.W.T., fired into the top-15 after shooting clean in both of his trips to the range. An Olympian in 2010, Green posted a time of 25 minutes, 27.9 seconds to lead the young Canadian squad.
“I’m definitely pumped with today’s result and it feels great,” said Green. “I was able to put in what felt like a consistent and solid effort throughout the entire race, and I felt like I was in complete control of my shooting.”
Green bounced back after a disappointing start to the season on Wednesday when he was 72nd in the 20-kilometre individual race.
“I really struggled on Wednesday and honestly wasn’t sure how today would go so I guess more than anything today’s result is a relief,” said Green.
Still young and developing in comparison to many competitors on the start line, the five-year veteran has been evolving into one of the nation’s best biathletes with three 14th-place finishes in the last three years. His first 14th place result came two years ago during a pursuit race in Italy. He matched that performance in a World Cup sprint last year in Oberhof, Germany.
“Being able to tie my career best result in the second race of the season is a confidence booster, and I’m feeling optimistic towards the rest of the season,” said Green. “My training this year has gone quite well and I’m confident in the work that I have done.”
Sweden’s Carl Johan Bergman thrilled the hometown crowd by taking the gold with a time of 24:22.5. Norway’s Tarjei Boe claimed the silver with a time of 24:30.1, while Emile Hegle Svendsen rounded out the men’s podium in third at 24:35.5.
Three other Canadians hit the start line in Oestersund on Friday. Regina’s Scott Perras, who has also been fighting his way into the top-30, dropped to 69th spot at 27:12.3 after missing three shots. World Cup rookie, Scott Gow of Calgary, finished 80th (27:35.0), while Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, of Shannon, Que., was 86th (27:45.5). Le Guellec finished 14th in the individual event on Wednesday.
Green will be the lone Canadian in the top-60 to qualify for the men’s pursuit race on Sunday. A trio of Canadian women will compete in the 7.5-kilometre sprint on Saturday in Sweden.

Brendan Green Training Update
Autumn Update for Biathlete Brendan Green
October 31, 2011
NWT Biathlon
Throughout the summer months, Brendan has been engaged in a rigorous training program with the National Team at their Biathlon Training centre in Canmore, Alberta. The off season training is critical for developing the strength and endurance to carry the athletes through the competitive winter season. Unfortunately, during a weight training session in late July, Brendan suffered a back injury from which he is still recovering. In spite of this setback, his recovery has been going well, and he is confident that he will be in good form by December when the team enters World Cup competitions.
The team spent several weeks in September and October taking part in altitude ski training on the Dachstein glacier in Austria. It is one of the few places in the world where athletes can train at high altitude during the day, and still return to a lower altitude for recovery – considered to be the most beneficial approach to increasing endurance. This altitude training was then evaluated thro
ugh a session of testing at the University of Calgary to measure each athlete’s oxygen uptake and heart stroke volume.
The team . has now started their early snow training in Canmore, using snow that has been stockpiled for this purpose. The team will undergo time trials for selection purposes in November, to determine who will start on the first World Cup Tour. Brendan has been pre-selected for this tour based on his strong World Cup results last season. His first race is scheduled to take place Nov. 30 in Oestersund, Sweden.
Go Augustana, Go! Good Luck This Season, Ilona and Joseph!

Hay River’s Canada Day Triathlon A Day of Personal Bests
Link to Final Results
Among the cheering crowd, curbside at the Don Stewart arena, for this year’s July 1, Canada Day parade, were ten outstanding local athletes along with their families and supporters. They were all on hand for the triathlon awards ceremony scheduled for the arena immediately following the annual main street event. It was natural to draw comparisons between the parade of world class, race ready jet boats and this hardy contingent who had just wrapped up their challenging swim, bike and distance run.
Race day for jet boaters and triathletes is the ultimate endurance test. Will all the preparation and training be up to the demands of the day? Given the course and conditions, how far can you push the envelope to maximize the result and come away with a best ever performance?
When the official results were in, on a day which featured cool, clear weather, ideal for racing, each and every triathlete had succeed in achieving a personal best in their event. Hugs and handshakes, smiles and group photos were all part of the finish line follow up celebration.
Ten km runner, Cory Tybring, anchored his squad to victory in the Olympic Triathlon team division. Set up with a blazing 1500 m lead off swim by Colton Yee and followed by Chase St. Julian’s personal best forty km cycle, Tybring’s trio held on to fend off cyclist Anne Cunningham’s gritty crew which included Michelle Magee in the pool and JJ McKinney, straight from his grad ceremony, finishing strongly with his best ever time in the 10 km run.
Hay River’s Colton Yee was sensational in the pool. Yee, a nationally ranked junior swimmer, made it all look so easy, gliding sleekly up and down sixty laps of the Don Stewart pool, driven by powerful underwater push offs at each turn.
This Canada Day event is just the start to a full and exciting swim schedule for Yee and his family. Colton, backed by his coaching dad, Kelvin, is off to Halifax next week to compete in the East Coast Swimming Championships. Later this summer, Yee will represent the Northwest Territories when he swims for team NWT at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops, BC. This fall, Yee is registered at Acadia University in Nova Scotia where, while working towards a college degree, he will compete for the swim team.
Top team cyclist, Chase St. Julian a veteran marathon runner, who works out of Edmonton, grew up in Hay River. St. Julian took advantage of the opportunity to combine the Canada Day triathlon event with a visit with family and friends. The next big event for St. Julian will be the grueling Death Race, scheduled for late July in Grande Cache, Alberta.
Amy MacDonald, a long standing Hay River multi-sport athletic star, was this year’s women’s sprint category event winner, completing the 750 m swim (15:14), 20 km bike (45:36), and 5 km run (24:00) in Hay River Canada Day Triathlon record breaking time. MacDonald’s official finish in 1:24:50 eclipsed the previous record of 1:29:24, set in 2010 by Yellowknife’s Beth Lenardon.
Finishing in the silver medal position behind MacDonald was Ilona Gyapay of Hay River whose time of 1:32:47 was a personal best, a full thirteen minutes ahead of her 2010 triathlon sprint time of 1:45:59. This was Gyapay’s fourth Hay River Canada Day Triathlon, making her the only athlete in the field to have participated in every triathlon since its inception in 2008.
Following the race, Gyapay reported that, “It gets easier each year. Although I don’t get a chance to swim that much, as a member of the Augustana University cross country ski team, I have a year round training program. Also, the weather conditions for this year’s triathlon were so much better than the cold and wind we had to deal with last year.”
Gyapay’s summer training schedule calls for a large volume of training - running, biking and roller skiing. In June, she completed a three day biking event from Yellowknife to Hay River, a classic northern challenge where the participants faced all the elements of blowing snow, hail and wind, while covering nearly five hundred kilometers of northern roads.
Claire MacDonald finished third in the women’s sprint event with a very respectable time of 1:39:53 in her first triathlon. MacDonald reported that she “felt great on the bike and with the run. I go for a run or a bike ride every day and enjoy keeping fit. The swimming isn’t something I do very often, but I’m glad I gave the triathlon a try.”
Hay River town councillor, Bernie Langille, back for his second Hay River Canada Day Triathlon, improved on last year’s time by five minutes in the men’s sprint event. Langille worked up to the event with an eight week training program.
Tanya Phillips, working for the Town of Hay River’s recreation department had things extremely well organized for this year’s event. Ross DeBoer measured and marked distances for the bike and running courses. Timing, statistics and organizational support was provided by Hay River Ski Club volunteers: Belinda Whitford, Doug and Theresa Swallow, Bob and Susan White, Chris Irvine, Jean Ramsay and Braam Berub. Kris Gluppe, Simon Fraser University’s, all star football centre, was this year’s celebrity official. He has promised to return north this winter for a try as celebrity official for a club ski race.
Race organizers were very appreciative of the support given by the local bylaw officer, David Ryan, fire department and ambulance volunteers, Stuart Phillips, Shannon Luckhardt and Sara Conley. Ring’s IDA Phamacy and That Video Place provided corporate support with draw prizes. Organizers wanted to acknowledge these local businesses for making a difference with their ongoing sponsorship of community sport.
On Saturday the Hay River leg of the world championship jet boat races wrapped up with Russell and Spencer King rocketing to victory. Other Hay River jet boat crews also distinguished themselves with outstanding results. Although the race weekend has passed for both our community’s accomplished triathletes and formidable river racers we’d do well to recognize the tremendous ongoing, year round commitment that it takes to achieve such success.
Striving for one’s personal best effort continues to bring out the best in our community. Well done Hay River.

Brendan Green and team Canada have continued to gain momentum with strong finishes in Pokljuka, Slovenia, this weekend. Brendan combined steady shooting with some quick skiing to score a 21st in the individual 20 K event and 29 th in the 10 K sprint. Considering the elite world cup field of over 100 world class biathletes and the fact that ten months ago, Canada could not qualify more than one Canadian male for the Vancouver Olympics, it is truly amazing that our Canadian squad is performing at this level.
Canada’s mixed relay team, anchored by Hay River’s Brendan Green, is ranked 13 th going into Sunday’s showcase event which will draw the pre-Christmas racing season to a close. Look for this talented young Canadian team to impress on this world stage. Sparks will be flying!

Thank you Gary Hoffman for the awesome season opening plough out of the Hay River Ski Club entry road and parking lot. How many years has it been, Gary?
Note: Gary volunteers all the time and expertise that it takes to keep the ski club open year in and year out. Cheers for Gary from everyone at the club. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Pat Bobinski has the trails packed, groomed and open for skiing. He has spent endless hours this past week putting the trails in shape, setting up signs and doing everything it takes to have things just right for the opening of the ski season.
In the weeks prior to our first snowfall, Pat was out brushing trails, some with the tractor and mower and others by hand with the brush cutter.
It’s impossible to overstate Pat’s contributions to skiing, biathlon, trails, club programs and the development of nordic sport in the north. We congratulate Pat on the well earned national biathlon award he received this summer. From all the club volunteers a standing ovation goes out to Pat B, the number one volunteer of all time. All the best in this new season, Patrick.

Outstanding Hay River Biathlon Team Recognized at Sport North Awards

Hi everyone - Here are a few pics of the Award's Banquet from YK. Congratulations to Christopher and Angeline on being named male and female athlete of the year respectively, Pat for receiving the Contributor to Sport award and Larry for receiving the Corporate Contributor to Sport Award!
Angeline received her award from Comissioner Tuccaro, Christopher from Minister McLeod and Pat from Angela Inch (daughter of the late Judy Inch of YK). Both Christopher and Angeline thanked the members and volunteers of the Hay RIver Ski Club, and Pat, Doug, April, Ellie, Bob and Marek were all specifically named. Pat also extended his thanks to everyone involved and went on to most humbly describe how easy it was for him to look good when he is surrounded by such dedicated people!
I was privileged to accept Larry's award on his behalf and to read his acceptance speech in which he too acknowledged and thanked the committed group of volunteers from the Ski and Biathlon Club.
Also being acknowledged at the banquet were Shiela Hachey, Belinda Whitford, Joseph Lirette, Doug Swallow and the NWT Cadet Biathlon Team (Kim, Angeline, Alicia, Colton, Christopher and Brandon) as all had been nominated by NWT biathlon for various other awards that were presented during the evening.
On another note, Brendan Green is in town this week for T&F and is willing to do one or two sessions with the biathletes - tentative plan is for a roller ski on Friday evening and then a shooting clinic on Saturday. Stay tuned for more specifics as we get them.
Thanks everyone!
Chuck

Canada's Relay Team Stands Tall, Placing Top 10 in the Olympic Relay
Rain, sleet and blinding snow swept in off the Pacific to set the scene for today's men's olympic biathlon relay. Going into the event, the Canadians would not rule out a possibility of making the podium.
The team's veteran, Robin Clegg, opened up with a sensational 0 - 0+1 first leg, placing team Canada in the top six, only seconds out of first. Shortly into Marc Andre Bedard's second leg, he took over first place! In his first prone shooting Marc Andre shot 0+1 keeping the host country's team in the mix. Canadian flags waved and the home crowd cheered them on.
The second time through, Bedard kept pace with another 0+1 round in the standing position. Both lead skiers had held their own in the shooting as race conditions deteriorated. Brendan Green took over with some fast skiing, coming into the range in the top ten. Wet snow threw a blanket over the range where Green had to use two extra bullets in the prone position. Meanwhile, all the teams encountered trouble in the range, as they battled the changing conditions.
Green used his quickness on the skis to battle back from an eleventh place position and arrive in the range with a group of athletes looking to pull their teams close for the last leg. Brendan cleaned the first four targets in short order, missed the fifth, but took only one extra bullet to clear the range. Brendan battled it out in on the last 2.5 Km of the course through very tough conditions to make the pass, with team Canada a fraction of a second ahead, in tenth spot.
JP Leguellec, Canada's outstanding anchor, took over from there and brought the team home with 0 - 0+1 shooting to move Canada into the 10 th position, well clear of the rest of the field. Only Russia and the Ukraine shot better than Canada, who ended up tying Norway and Germany with only 7 extra bullets used on the day. The vaunted US squad had to resort to twelve extra bullets and four penalty laps, given the stormy conditions in the range and on the trails. Tim Burke, the American star who skied third for the Americans against Canada's Green, used three extra bullets, along with an additional two penalty laps.
This result stands as the best Canadian olympic relay result ever. The Canadian team is by far the youngest on the world cup circuit. It looks like this confident squad has made a statement at these Olympic games that they'll be a force to reckon with both for the rest of this season and on into the foreseeable future. What fun for biathlon fans in Canada, the world ..... Hay River ;o)

Jean Philippe Leguellec Carried the Hopes of Canadian Biathlon Fans into Today's 10 K Olympic Sprint and .... He Raced to a Brilliant 6th Place, Setting Up the Possibilities of a Miracle Medal in the 12.5 K Pursuit Event Scheduled for Tuesday.
Press Release - IBU Web Site:
Leguellec Did Everything
“I feel awesome, it was an awesome race. I stayed focused on my technique and on my skiing and I had fast skis too so the skiing part went well. On shooting, I came in prone, shot clean, shot fast. I really fed of the crowd that was cheering after every target. That’s something I always hear in Ruhpolding when the people are cheering for the Germans but to have it here for me is actually really exciting and it was awesome. Being the only Canadian is frustrating and I think we should have been four here for sure, but I am happy to pull off a good race for my teammates.”

Surprise in Martell Sprints

Canadian takes Men’s Sprint
The first competition at IBU Cup 7 in Martell, Italy ended with a small surprise. The Men’s Sprint was won by the young Canadian Brendan Green, 44.3 seconds ahead of Germany’s Christoph Knie.
The basis for the success of the Canadian was a perfect result at the shooting range in combination with a strong performance on the tracks. Green, who comes from the Northwest Territories in Canada, had already won a bronze medal in the Relay at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships 2007 here in Martell. “Martell obviously is a good location for me. Also, the low temperatures worked in my favor,” he commented after the competition.
Brendan, the second fastest skier on the course, is posting outstanding results on the IBU circuit going into the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Robin Clegg joined Brendan in the top 10, with a come from behind, 7th place finish.
