Welcome home Ilona Gyapay!

Ilona has completed another fine year at Augustana University.  She continues to train, compete and ski for the college cross country ski team at Augustana.  She returns to Canmore for some skiing up at Mount Shark this week.  A long range goal, aside from another good year of academics is competing at the next Canada Winter Games.  Great to see you home, Ilona!  Good luck with your training.  Very exciting :o)

Congratulations Seth Patterson!  Perfect attendance for youth skiing through 2012 - 2013!! :o)  Amazing.

Sitelle, Tracey, Ellie, Susan & Bob met with the youth ski group this past Sunday, January 20. It warmed up to a balmy minus 23 C ;o).  Blue skies, sunshine, brilliantly carved trails... and famous quotes by Jackson.... what more could we ask for?

See you all again next Sunday.

Cheers,

Next youth ski day - Sunday, January 20, 2013.  See you there! :o)

Saturday Evening, January 12, 2013

Yes, we'll ski on Sunday.  In spite of the cold snap (-32C at 7:30 pm), we will still have our youth ski program at the Hay River Ski Club tomorrow (Sunday, January13, 2013).  We have lots of hot chocolate, craft ideas, a toasty fire going and... we will get out for a ski and activities.  Remember your neckwarmers!  See you Sunday for some fun in the cool January sun!!!

Happy New Year youth skiers and families!  The group will meet at the Hay River Ski Club chalet at 1:30 pm today.  See you there :o)

Sunday, December 16, 2012:   A wonderful day at the Hay River Ski Club.  The biathlon team held its final workout before the Christmas break. Coach Lirette has had a terrific program going throughout these weeks leading up to the 'official' start to our winter ski season.  Today's balmy minus 13 C temperatures picked up everyone's spirits and ski times!

Youth skiers worked with leaders Sitelle, Tracy, Ellie and Susan.  Following up on games and skill development, some candy canes were teased out of the 'candy cane woods' trail section :o).  The youngest group added a mini-biathlon event tossing balls with both great precision and delight.

Everyone celebrated NWT bird count day by setting up birch branch suet feeders which the ski club bird society welcomed with open beaks.  Downy & hairy woodpeckers, boreal and black capped chickadees and some pine grosbeaks all joined in today's feast.   Thank you to Pat for recycling the birch trees downed in the ice storm.  Mahsi cho to Chris Irvine for the slick drilling effort.   Bruce Green, Ellie Baxter, Susan and Bob all got to get quite excited and involved in the feeder fun too. :o)

Merry Christmas to everyone .... young skiers, parents, leaders, our trails hero Pat.  We are having ssssssssooooo much fun that we can't wait until our next scheduled get together in early January - January 6th!  That's too long to wait.  Be sure to ski, ski, ski..... until we ski you again ;o).

Families and guests are all invited out to the ski club for a Friday, December 21, 7:00 pm 'longest night of the year' pot luck snack social/ski/snowshoe.  Contact Ellie or Susan if you have any questions :o)

Sunday, November 25, 2012 - the youth ski program kids and parents took to the hills beside the clubhouse.  Lots of fun! Morgan even had his mom skiing backwards down the tracked hill.  Great participation and support from the parents who have made the commitment to coming out and join in on the skiing fun!  Thanks everyone.  See you next week. :o)

Fire Safety - Sparky's Story Link

Thank you to Hay River Fire Department Fire Chief, Ross Potter, for making a visit to the Hay River Ski Club today, Friday, November 23.  Mr. Potter has been working with the ski club executive to ensure that the club's fire safety procedures are state of the art.  Chief Potter's visit today certified our club as up to standard in fire safety protocols.  :o)

*** Parents and young skiers should make it a point of checking on the posted fire prevention protocols which are posted at the club :o) *****

Yahoo.... session two!  We had another great turn out for youth skiing on Sunday.  Thank you parents, trails people, volunteer coaches and youth skiers for a wonderful day of skiing and getting together at the Hay River Ski Club.

See you next Sunday, November 25! :o)

Opening Session - November 11, 2012

What a terrific opening session we had for our youth skiing program this past Sunday, November 11, 2012.    Pat B had the trails in perfect order, complete with a fine new training hill set up behind the club house and a ten track grid for classic skiing.  Wow!

Over twenty skiers have registered to date.  This past Sunday, we all met in the club house at 1:30 pm, had an opening indoor greeting, followed by a whole group activity outside before breaking into three age/skill development groups.  Tracy Pope took the older experienced skiers, Sitelle Cheskey worked with the 'middle aged ;o)' skiers, Bob and Susan White followed up with the youngest, newest club skiers.

Seven year old youth skier, Morgan Young, started the season off with a cheerful and inspirational opening message for the group:  "As long as we all have fun and do our best, it will be great!"   .... and of course, he was right!  .... it was! :o)

Thank you to all the parents who came out to support their kids.  Looking forward to next Sunday, September 18, 1:30 pm at the ski club.  If know someone who'd be interested in joining in, bring them along :o).

Registration is still open. Parents/guardians and youth (age 10/11 and younger) are asked to dress for conditions and meet at the clubhouse.  If equipment is required, the ski club has a limited supply available for rental.
