Sunday, February 5, 2012

OSLO, Nor.—Brendan Green capped off a dream week with a 10th-place finish in a World Cup biathlon mass start competition on Sunday in Oslo, Norway.

The 25-year-old Green, who posted the first back-to-back top-15 finishes of his career after finishing ninth on Thursday and 13th Saturday, extended the streak to three when he clocked a 10th-place time of 41:57.6 in the 15-kilometre mass start.

“I think when things go well I have the expectation to be fighting it out with the top,” said Green, of Hay River, N.W.T. “It’s an awesome feeling and I hope I can be up there more consistently in the future.”

Green was joined in the top-15 with his 26-year-old teammate, Jean-Philippe Le Guellec of Shannon, Que. The two-time Olympian missed just two shots in his four round of shooting while skiing to a 12th-place finish at 42:09.8.

Norway’s Emil Hegle Svendsen was the top finisher in the field of the best 30 athletes, posting a time of 40:44.1. Germany’s Andrea Birnbacher claimed the silver at 40:50.4, while Russia’s Evegeniy Garanichev rounded out the men’s podium in third with a time of 41:01.9.

Zina Kocher, of Red Deer, Alta., was the lone Canadian woman to qualify for the 12.5-kilometre mass start. The 29-year-old clocked-in at 43:19.4.

Germany’s Andrea Henkel won the women’s race with a time of 38:01.2.
