Bendan Qualifies for Biathlon World Championships

Gold Sweep for Brendan Green:
Qualifies for Biathlon World Championships
Noram Cup #6 10km Sprint and Pursuit
Canmore Alberta, Jan.17 and 18, 2009

Biathlete Brendan Green held off strong challenges from a number of powerful contenders to

win both races in the Noram Cup #6 and secure the only open spot on the National Senior Men’s

Biathlon Team. Fifteen top biathletes were vying for the spot, including six world class

competitors who have won medals in previous World Championship relay events. Several also had

extensive World Cup experience.

Brendan came through with solid shooting in each of his qualifying races. But the area that

he managed to dominate was the skiing. Now among the top freestyle skiers in the country, he

nearly secured a place on the Under 23 Cross Country World Championship Team a few weeks ago.

Biathlon is a very technical sport, requiring a balance between accurate shooting and fast

skiing. Shooting requires great precision, and a biathlete must be careful not to exceed

their limit in skiing and compromise their shooting. In the excitement of a race, it

sometimes happens that a biathlete will get lured into a skiing race, only to lose out by

making errors on the range.

The pressure on all the top contenders was intense. Although Brendan had won in each of the

first two qualifying races, his margin of victory was only a few seconds. Heading into the

third and final race, the Pursuit, if any of the top contenders were to win by a wider

margin, Brendan could be displaced from his leading position. In an exciting conclusion,

Brendan set a fast pace on the trail to fend off the main challengers intent on taking

control. On the third trip into the range, their efforts to out-ski Brendan began to take its

toll as their shooting penalties mounted. Brendan went on to win with a commanding 33.6

second lead in a time of 35:10.7.

In qualifying for the team, Brendan will be able to compete in the next two World Cup Races,

as well as the World Championships in Pyeongchang, Korea. Since the World Championships are

to be the qualifying event for the Vancouver Olympics, Brendan is another step closer to

realizing his dream: making Canada’s Olympic Team.

Brendan will leave for Italy on Tuesday to join the National Team for World Cup #6 in

Antholtz. Jan. 22-25.  After a week or so of altitude training and preparation in Italy and

Germany, the team will leave for Korea and final preparations for the World Championships

Feb.12-22. Brendan will then return to Canada to prepare for World Cup #7 at the Olympic

venue in Whistler B.C. March 12-15.
