Have fun in a Traditional Loppet

The historic Fitz-Smith Loppet is a challenging one-day event that allows people to experience a small piece of Canada’s Sub-Arctic.

Much of the trail encompasses sections of the portage routes used by native people and in the 17th and 18th centuries by voyageurs and fur traders. These trails provided access around the formidable Slave River rapids. There is spectacular scenery as the trail winds its way through jackpine and spruce stands high on the banks of the Slave River.

The Fitz-Smith Loppet began with a few hardy nordic skiers in 1975 who forged a ski trail between the two towns. The Loppet is now celebrating its 33rd season and still has many local skiers participating in the event including a few of the ones who originated the tour.

If you push on and complete the 30 km of groomed trail you will end up at the Fort Smith Ski Club chalet right smack on the 60th parallel.  This marks the final leg of the ski tour. However, it is not the end of the festivities as all participants, friends, families and volunteers are invited to a potluck supper and a fun evening to follow.

Start making your plans now to join us in Fort Smith on March 14, 2009.
