Former PTUB Skiers Go on to Star with the Canadian National Biathlon Team. Robin Clegg & Brendan Green Aim For Olympics

ROBIN CLEGG CRACKS TOP-30 TO FINISH AS TOP CANADIAN IN BIATHLON WORLD

CUP AT WHISTLER OLYMPIC PARK

WHISTLER, B.C.—The veteran of the Canadian Biathlon Team, Robin Clegg who is a member

of the Quebec Ski Team, squeaked into the top-30 to finish as the best Canadian at 29th spot in

the men’s 20-kilometre individual start competition near Whistler, B.C. on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Clegg crossed the finish line less than three minutes off the leading pace at 52

minutes 51.3 seconds, despite missing three targets in his four trips to the range.

“I was skiing strong today, but I kind of misread the wind a couple of times and that cost me quite

a bit,” said Clegg. “The course is in magnificent shape. We have not seen a course like this the

whole season in terms of course preparation and track conditions.”

Brendan Green, of Hay River, N.W.T., and Regina’s Scott Perras, also hit the start line under

perfect racing conditions in the Callaghan Valley. A 22-year-old World Cup rookie, Green posted

a solid 46th-place finish at 53:48.9.

Robin Clegg

Born: 11/08/77 Ottawa, Ont.
Residence: Canmore, Alta.
Club: Chelsea Nordic
Coach: Geret Coyne
Years on Senior National Team: 11
Training Centre: Canmore, Alta.

Growing up in Yellowknife, N.W.T., Robin began recreational skiing when he was two years old and skiing competitively while enrolled in a jackrabbit program when he was seven. After moving to Ottawa, Robin started biathlon in 1995 under coach Dan Mallet and attended the Canada Winter Games where he won two silver medals, which inspired him to pursue a career in biathlon. However, it wasn’t until Robin won a Canadian Championship title in his final year as a junior that he made his total commitment to the sport of biathlon. That year, he made the move to Canmore and in 2002 wore the Canadian maple leaf while competing at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, where he finished 28th. He entered the 2006 Olympic Winter Games as the leader of the Canadian Biathlon Team, and took a major step forward last season in making his first trip to the international podium when he posted a career-best eighth-place finish in a 20-kilometre World Cup race.
