At this year''s PTUB banquet held Saturday evening, March 21, the Hay River Cross Country Ski Club recognized John Ashcroft as the recipient of this year's Rick Green Volunteer Award. Pat Bobinski accepted a plaque on behalf of the Ashcroft family.
Over the years John gave generously of his time and energy to support the club's biathlon program and facilities. John was there to see his son Brandon grow from a rookie into a triple gold medal Arctic Winter Games star. When Brandon went off to school John continued to stay involved with the biathlon program. He was a vital part of the officiating squad. Using his talent as a handyman, John made sure that the range ran smoothly with targets tuned and uniquely northern polar bears marking the lanes.
Olympic prospect, Brendan Green sent a note from Norway on the biathlon world cup circuit expressing his appreciation to John for the outstanding support over the years. The Swallow family, Lirettes, Glaicars, Hacheys, Greens, Magtibays, Norris family, Pat Bobinski and all the skiers and club organizers stand together to say "thank you John, from the bottom of our hearts".
